    Acid Sulphate Soils

Highly oxidized sulfidic mud exposed by feral pig damage.

Salt Water Rationing via Flood Gate manipulation.

Key Benefits

bullet

In tidally effected areas the production of sulfuric acid from surrounding landforms can be neutralized using natural carbonate in salt water.

bullet

   Dry cracked drain beds.

bullet

Significant oxidation of sulfidic sediment at a depth of 300mm.

This photo shows the black iron monosulfide, grey benign unoxidised passive acid sulfate soils (PASS) marine mud and the oxidized region from drying and cracking all in close proximity.

Capabilities

bullet

The Calibrated Flood Gate Valve allows for managed amounts of seawater relying only on tidal flow.

bullet

This involved allowing managed amounts of seawater into the drainage system to essentially keep the drains in a wet un-oxidized state and also neutralize acidity from surrounding fields.

bullet

These drains, if maintained, provide a habitat for juvenile marine species and by increasing pH drop our most heavy metals within the drainage system.  These 'dropped out' heavy metals are in the form of sulfidic muds sometimes referred to as 'black ooze' (pictured) or iron mono sufide.  It is essential that these drains are never permitted to dry out and crack or the whole oxidation - acid cycle recommences.

bullet

Juvenile mud crabs existing in damp marine unoxidised muds beneath the cracked drain bed with no chance of survival.  Had these drains had seawater maintained in them the mud crabs would have survived.
