CRAB - Calibrated Reagent Applicating Blender
The CRAB is a
technically advanced active dosing system meeting strict calibration
requirements and should be treated as a scientific instrument.
Overview
|
The CRAB is a multi purpose reagent dosing system
specifically designed for treating low pH effluent water associated with acid
mine drainage and neutralizing acid produced from disturbed acid sulphate soils.
|
|
The CRAB is unique in that
it uses coarse aggregate limestone (pictured) rock as the mixing agent
and carrier for other alkaline products such as calcium hydroxide.
|
|
The two part hopper or holding box contains reagent material
to be blended for release. Selected reagent material is ground
with water and calcium carbonate rock (limestone) according to the calibration -
as each site is analyzed according to the treatment required.

Different multiple reagents can be accurately blended to suit
treatment sites.
|
|
The sump collects water with finely ground product and
discharges mixed water and reagent directly into the target area through
suitable pressurized delivery systems.
|
The CRAB. has been designed to provide dosing of calcium limestone
plus hydrated lime into bodies of water or watercourses, roads or spoils as means of controlling
Acid Sulfate runoff
.
The CRAB can calibrate chemicals and reagents - see below.
The CRAB can use extremely alkaline substances - see below.
Depending on the nature of the
Acid Sulphate problem there is a machine
size to suit - see below.
Key Benefits
Using the
C.R.A.B. is a cost effective alternative.
The CRAB is specifically
environmentally friendly, requiring very low power requirements, 6KW, to
carry out the full process. Suitable power supplies include -
|
Mains power, |
|
Portable generator - diesel or petrol, |
Claims
|
Efficient crushing & grinding of product of 10 - 100mm plus rock to
20microns or less. The rock is the medium for the CRAB and provide
useful crushed product for example calcium limestone or rock phosphate
depending on desired application. |
|
Accurate calibration of
product into surrounding waterways or onto spoils. |
|
Very low power requirements. |
|
Improve dissolved oxygen levels. |
The CRAB can accurately calibrate and disperse
|
dry powders, |
|
granular compounds, |
|
rock product up to
100mm, |
|
liquids, and
|
|
if needed a blend of any of the above if required. |
|
Reagents are more effective due to the unique blending and mixing process. |
|
Oxygenation of water is a natural part of this process. |

|
The high neutralizing
factor meant that there was a need for exact calibration to eliminate the
possibility of overcorrection of pH status.
|
The use of highly alkaline substance
in the initial treatment of acidic water means that the acidity is
immediately neutralized by the alkalinity. Very simply until a desired
balance is achieved, eg pH 6.5, high alkaline reagent discharge is complete
and final neutral pH correction is achieved using calcium carbonate.
|
|
The use of
highly alkaline neutralizing agents reduces the tendency for alkaline reagent
armouring by soluble metals.
|
|
All dosing operation would be
accompanied by laboratory reports and recommendations made.
|
|
All personnel using the CRAB
would need to undergo training in the art of pH manipulation and have been
certified by Acid Solutions Pty Ltd in the use of the machine.
|
|
Calibrated Flow
|
In order to ensure absolute
accuracy with calibration of reagent, a number of influencing factors
must be known - |
-
Belt speed.
-
Auger speed.
-
Water flow through the machine
-
Laboratory results.
|
All of the above lead to a Mixture
Ratio. |
Liquid Reagent Introduction System
|
The use of liquid reagents such as sodium hydroxide require extreme
caution and exact calibration. This issue has been effectively addressed
by fitting a second container that houses the reagent. The reagent is
then introduced at necessary intervals via the calibrated pumps and injected
into the CRAB ensuring complete mixing. |
|
The Liquid Reagent Introduction System can be manufactured to relate to
job size. |
Fail Safe Shut Down
|
The CRAB is designed to shut down via countdown timer,
pH overcorrection. |
|
The Fail Safe System contained include - |
-
Earth leakage on electrical system.
-
Low water level - sump.
-
System overflow.
-
Extreme alkalinity limit.
Government and Agri-business have become aware of
decreasing water quality on coastal strips below 5 metres AHD.
The problem on the coastal strips has been
identified by acid run off due to oxidation of acid sulphate soils.
